COMPLEMENTARY AND ALTERNATIVE THERAPIES FOR SLEEP
A sleep disorder, or somnipathy, is a medical disorder of the sleep patterns of a person or animal. Some sleep disorders are serious enough to interfere with normal physical, mental, social and emotional functioning. When a person suffers from difficulty falling asleep and/or staying asleep with no obvious cause, it is referred to as insomnia.
Sleep disorders are broadly classified into dyssomnias, parasomnias, circadian rhythm sleep disorders involving the timing of sleep, and other disorders including ones caused by medical or psychological conditions and sleeping sickness. Some common sleep disorders include the following:
Alternative Medicine and Sleep Disorders
- sleep apnea (stops in breathing during sleep)
- narcolepsy and hypersomnia (excessive sleepiness at inappropriate times)
- cataplexy (sudden and transient loss of muscle tone while awake)
- sleeping sickness (disruption of sleep cycle due to infection)
- night terrors
According to the National Health Interview Survey analysis, over 1.6 million civilian, adult US citizens use Complimentary and alternative medicine (CAM) to treat insomnia or trouble sleeping. The details of this analysis will serve as a guide for future research on CAM therapies for sleep disorders.
CAM therapies have a long history of use for the treatment of sleep disorders. As a group of diverse medical and health care systems, practices, and products that are not presently considered to be part of conventional medicine, it can be overwhelming to find a list of what researchers say work. Learn which therapies can actually help with sleep.
